Leighton Buzzard is a traditional English market town in the county of Bedfordshire. A network of streets and mews lead into Market Square, where the 19th century former Moot Hall and a fine 15th century market cross are located. In history, the town goes largely unrecorded until 906, when it was noted that the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot next to the River Ouzel, which runs around the town.. |

The town has been the home to various industries over the years: Lipton Tea, Gossard clothing and Lancer Boss among them. The town has a sizeable sand quarying industry, which is still busy today. The first and only TXE1 telephone exchange was developed in the town by the Post Office and went into service in 1968. To meet the growing demand it was added to by two TXE2 exchanges and a TXE6 exchange in t 1971. Leighton Buzzard is also known for its Light Railway (the LBLR). It operates on a 2ft gauge and is just under 3 miles in length. The line was built just after the First World War to serve the many sand quarries to the north of the town. It now serves as a heritage railway staffed by volunteers. The Grand Union Canal provides the back drop to the town. This once industrial artery now provides a variety of leisure pursuits, with colourful narrow boats taking advantage of the free mooring to visit the many, individual, local shops & pubs. |
